Bill Smith, a 62-year-old retired RAF Technical Officer, and Water Beetle, his home-made miniature submarine. He built it in his home, seen here, in Bognor Regis. It was on its way to do its sea trials in the Channel as its maiden voyage. See later pix of the actual trials where it performed a successful 80 ft dive and gained a place in the Guinness book of records in 1996 as the world's smallest fully functional submarine. It held this title for 12 years and was used for marine biology research and photography.
