Today, to date, this is the only thread being discussed. Rather than suggesting other topics as mentioned above, why not open other threads. For example, in the Shipping Lines forum, 20 sub-forums have not been opened. Surely, members must have served on these lines? I opened two, P&O and Shaw Savill hoping others would follow. There are also seven forums all shipping related not opened yet. If all these were opened, it would soon cancel out the cruising updates.
Is Shipping Industry News being posted because they pay for the "advertising".
As for this thread is the only one being discussed is that most of us posted everything we had about our old companies on SN and it was read by all the members here.

I think Chris is correct. All, or virtually all, of us on this site have posted extensively on SN. I have applied some thought to generating new posts but have not come up with anything because I felt I was creating almost something false for the sake of it. Having been on SN for years I have pretty much exhausted my fund of stories, memories etc of companies, equipment, trips and characters. From a personal perspective I open up the Forum/s scan though it and if I am interested open it, if not just skip over it. Personally do not have a problem with that policy but each to their own.

Perhaps the memories are drying up as we all get older. Not many Cape Horners on here these days.

I am obviously not on the same page as everyone else; perhaps not on the same Site: this discussion of Cruising Industry News is meaningless to me.
I mean no offence so will relate how I log-on and what happens when I do so that perhaps someone can explain the difference between that and what they do......

I go to the Shipping History Site and enter my log-in details;
I get a box telling me to click if I am not taken to the Site;
The home page appears;
I immediately refresh the page, because if I do not then my log-in is ineffective, my name does not appear in the list of members on-line and I cannot post;

Scroll down a bit;

A section headed 'What's Going On'

Scroll past that;

A section 'Random Photos'

Scroll past that;

A section 'Member's Area'

Scroll past that;

A section 'Swinging the lamp'

Scroll past that;

A section 'Shipping discussion'

First item 'Messdeck'
Second item 'News and Views'
Third item 'Cruise Industry News'

That is a lot of clicking and scrolling and I still haven't opened the forum.
So can someone please explain what the problem is because I don't see one.

Just one comment.
Do you click or have you clicked the - Remember me - box. Believe this could help with your login.
Any other problems let us know.

Ref previous posts on SN, there will still be people who did not see them I am sure. Lets have a few more posts old or new.

Neville

On both sites, I leave myself logged on permanently and have no bother at all. Why is there a need to log out after every session? Is it a security concern?

Me too also likewise.

Open up the site, click on "Forums" on the red bar, see how many new posts there are since my last visit and scroll down. Find the topics of interest and click on one to read the postings.

Four times in a 10 year span!
Thrice Westwards and once t'other way.

Only once was the wind/sea under Force 3/slight ... the other three times ...
absolutely bloody frightening!

Islay, How about a thread on Cape Horn and more of your experiences. I'd be interested.

Would love to JJ, but being a Ludite in the purist form, I'm afraid I am not savvy enough to "open a new" thread!
Also the memory fades a tad ... but I'd be happy to share the most frightening experience heading westwards around the Horn ... should someone take it upon themselves to create the forum page!!

Islay,

Its really simple. Click the forum, either - Pig and Whistle or if on sail - Tall Ships.
When this opens there is a large red sign top left - POST NEW THREAD - click this then when it opens add your title then your message. On completion click - SUBMIT THREAD - and you are done.
If you have problem with this let me know and I will open the thread for you.

Neville

Hi,

Based on your feedback we've now made the cruise industry news forum 'opt-in'. This means that unless you explicitly choose to, posts from this forum will not appear when viewing new posts, searching or browsing the forum.

If you wish to continue seeing posts from this forum, you'll need to join the 'Cruise Industry News' group through your user control panel.

Thanks for your valuable feedback!

Good idea.
The same solution as for the great fishing debate some years ago.

Ollie's instructions in #63 describe the action to be taken if you wish to continue seeing the cruising information.

Now the fire has been extinguished I suppose I'll remain in happy ignorance of what it was all about.
