I'm not that daft.

I got a letter from Saga today, reminding me that I used to insure my car through them. This came about after I was quoted a premium over three times my previous payment by the company I used at the time. Saga quoted me a premium at the previous price, and this was fine for two years, then they quoted a stupid price, and I moved on. Now they are offering to insure at the reasonable price again. I am sure if I accept, the premium will not rise again...

It's Saga, not Gaga they want me accept.

Happens all the time Farmer John, every year I get my car insurance renewal from my insurer quoting a really high price. After a bit of internet browsing I find a price quote from my insurer at a much lower price for the same cover. On to phone to complain and get the usual response "oh sorry that is for new customers but we will give you that price".... all in all a pointless pantomime and waste of time. Why not just offer their best price from the get go? Do they really think we don't look at these things and shop around ???

I suppose you could argue that we don't learn that well. I have bought gallons of beer, but there is never any in my house.

I have been back and forward to Saga over the last few years because of this. This year I have both car and house with them. Car at a slightly lower price than last year after the phone call. House insurance is staggering and have the same cover as normal at just under £200 - that was my best yet. At one stage they got our house insurance up to over £700. A yearly few hours browsing the internet and phoning.

I fondly believe that using a broker avoids these issues (although I ma direct with BUPA and do not 'go abroad', not on my own account anyway). Has anyone else had issues with a brokered deal?

David,

Yes I agree regarding Brokers but some of the insurance companies - Direct Line - for instance only deal with you direct via phone or internet. They are often the cheapest.
My best buy recently is our travel insurance. Being ex BT and paying a modest fee monthly to the pensioners NFOP - this year we have an agreement with the Civil Service insurance for multi travel worldwide for £255 per year. No age limit and no medical loading.
