If I dont win one soon Im picking up my marbles and go elsewhere to play, Sparkie, how much of a BACKHANDER do you need to slip me a couple of answers.

Malcolm G 30th September 2022 14:07

Stick with John, it keeps the brain active..
It took me a bit of looking, mainly in the wrong place, to find this…

That looks like the 'Hood entrance' to Portland harbour.
So that would make it HMS Hood (The one before the famous one)

Sparkie2182 30th September 2022 15:51

HMS Hood.

Correct.

On that ship they are 'Flotilla bands' to denote number of flotilla.
They used a code of colours, or none, but JFS does not tell me what 3 black bands were.

Bands on fwd funnel would be used to show Flotilla Leaders and Divisional Commanders.
JFS does tell me that Home Fleet were white; Med Fleet, red or black; China, black.

Our Ned 30th September 2022 19:51

HMS Isis is wearing three black bands on her after funnel, indicating that she's a member of the Third Destroyer Flotilla.

Well, it looks like Vancouver

Malcolm G 30th September 2022 20:05

Further to my #673 I have now consulted Wiki which gives the following:

The flotillas wore combinations of bands on their after funnel to identify them. From 1925 the following bands were worn;
  • 1st Destroyer Flotilla — one black band
  • 2nd Destroyer Flotilla — two black bands (one red from 1935)
  • 3rd Destroyer Flotilla — three black bands
  • 4th Destroyer Flotilla — no bands
  • 5th Destroyer Flotilla — one white band
  • 6th Destroyer Flotilla — two white bands
  • 8th Destroyer Flotilla (from 1935) — one black and one white band

Sparkie2182 30th September 2022 21:00

"Vancouver"

Really?
