I was a Duane Eddy fan back in those days. :supercool: Examining that link also led me to this ….
How many remember this western and theme …. ? https://youtu.be/tgvxu8QY01s |
Duane Eddy fan too...had a record of his autographed, disappeared at a party in South Kensington in 1966!
Paladin, compulsive watching, Richard Boone first rate cool man. Try this as a classic: Dire Straits...with Clapton as Lead Guitar! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlPjxz4LGak geoff |

You do indeed have tin ears. Even at my advanced age I can tell the difference between a man and a woman. :hippy: |
Here's another original and cover version,
First is by The Zombies, cover by Santana. Which is best? (this should not confuse even the terminally tin eared) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBdrDu9nq7Q https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoz8iXjfH4Y |
Well I'm going for the second one, mainly because I was only 3 when the first one came out (cough) … (how strange, my nose just got longer. )
I should mention Pat that you putting me onto Consider Phlebus got me hooked on Ian M. Banks and I'm now on Culture series book 8. It's like bloody crack cocaine .. I read somewhere they're considering a TV series for this. Beats me how they'll film it. |

As for Ian M Banks, Im glad you like his work, best sf I ever encountered and such a shame that there wont be any more. I have resorted to reading them all over again. Regards Pat:thumb: |

Just had this from someone I was at school with 60+ years ago.....Long but worth a watch/listen to.
THIS RUNS FOR QUITE A FEW MINUTES ?? BUT IT IS WORTH WATCHING . . . . . The day the music died! American Pie. Although Don McClean only released the song in 1971, for those of us who grew up in the 50’s and 60’s this is a great piece with some very poignant moments in the history of those times. And for those of you who did not, it’s a taste of what you missed! I knew that "American Pie" was the name of the plane in which Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper were killed when it crashed in 1958 – and I knew the chorus about music dying on that day. I have listened to American Pie for many years and I thought I understood what was being sung but now realise that I didn’t! However, when the words are put together with pictures and film clips the song takes on a new meaning. It took a lot of thought to produce this and it brings back lots of memories and also makes the lyrics really come alive! https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=VhX3b1h7GQw&feature=youtu.be geoff |
There's something a bit screwy about the link Geoff but I found the clip (I think.) I'm still a bit gobsmacked at 1971 … it doesn't seem that long ago …

First heard on Radio London in 1966, and in later years on BBC Three Counties Radio on Sunday evenings. You knew you were going to hear some great songs and some entertaining banter from old Cardboard Shoes himself, Keith Skues!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKxnHROIT3E |
So far ahead of its time, it's practically science fiction ….. :bounce:

Thanks for the link Geoff. I've told my children and G/children that I felt lucky to be there at the birth of Rock 'n Roll. To me it was like a breath of fresh air. Buddy and The Crickets were my favourite group/band and I admit to shedding tears on 3/2/59 aged 16.
When I could afford to buy a Fender Strat. guitar, I got the re-issue of the 1957 Tobacco Sunburst one as seen on the Chirping Crickets LP. I had that album back then and only recently got a replacement one off ebay. JJ. |

Jake Thackray - Leopold Alcocks - YouTube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWJJ3loRqUA Thanks for that one...we were staying in Bristol,at a Conference, many many moons ago and he was there for a gig.....when he had returned to hotel he came and played a couple of his best pieces then disappeared for the night. geoff |
Here's the original.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUJg...7YB0tE&index=9 Here's the cover version by the group of the same name. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZlNaakuJP8 I like the raw simplicity of the first version, but the second slower version is more atmospheric. The band played this as their sign out song at a live gig. |
I first heard this in the summer of 1967, on Radio London before that great station went off the air for all time. It refreshes so many memories, not least because my nickname at school in those days was Jack.
Of course, the Teenage Opera never did get completed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENblHOxi1c4 |
Which one of these appeals more?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-ikfwXOtqE (Art Garfunkel.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvzN...7KdRoaCWmEe8jU (The Flamingos.) I like them both, but I think the 1959 Doo Wop approach just edges it. |
Have to be honest, neither is very appealing. Especially compared to Frank Sinatra's rendition. :smoking:

Here are two versions of the most maudlin song in history;
First by Hank Snow; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8j-Dd0WDB94 Second by The Travelling Willburys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SqF56nj2LU The question, which is the most revolting? |
They seem diabolically similar to me …. (it's the same link ) ….:big_tongue:
But when it comes to maudlin …. (this used to make my old dear cry, but when I heard it I just wanted to climb the nearest church tower with a rifle ...) https://youtu.be/6URIHQXmPmY |

(Gets rifle out and starts to clean it.) :really_mad:

I fixed it Bob. Listening to it again, I reckon that the Travelling Willbury's version is possibly the worst track they ever made, and thats saying something!:pint: |
Thanks for fixing it Pat … (sort of.)
Makes my day of time travelling even worse by introducing more suffering. :balloon: |

I grew up with these below:) LONNIE DONEGAN Have a Drink on Me - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqW6W82ykqI Kenny Rogers - Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDOznxiEcdM And anything by the late great Frankie Laine Frankie Laine - That's My Desire - 1957 - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSKrvEdLXaM |
I am not partial to much of that kind of stuff, but for some reason I like this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwy7MjaquCM The odd stop/start bits and some of the guitar playing is fascinating, and the shots of the audience dancing is very cheerful. |

[QUOTE=gray_marian;19295]I grew up with these below:)
LONNIE DONEGAN Have a Drink on Me - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqW6W82ykqI I used to think that was the greatest song involving drink until this came along: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2hWYBfhci8 (It mentions Lonnie but where??) |
We have had some really morbid and dreary songs lately, and Tom posted some good old drinking songs. This one combines both themes!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cKPchRDaVM |
Talking about drinking songs, here's one which describes comprehensively the worst hangover you ever had.
Although it was supposed to be about taking LSD it fits any kind of horrible hangover, especially one you get after drinking too much Dr Penfold's. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WUTlCTi7fg Kenny Rogers and the first edition feat Glen Campbell on guitar. |
Lets have some one hit numbers.
Here's my favourite, by Norman Greenbaum, a massive hit in 1969, Greenbaum never had another hit record. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZQxH_8raCI |
Yeah that is strange … because that number was a true classic.
One hit wonder ? :flowers: … but if it's going to be a 'one hit,' it was a good one to go out on. |
