I must have a tin ear --- there's a difference? Funny how memory plays tricks on one -- I thought the following was the greatest thing since sliced bread when I listened to it with my wife to be in a record booth back in '58:

I was a Duane Eddy fan back in those days. :supercool: Examining that link also led me to this ….

How many remember this western and theme …. ?

You do indeed have tin ears. Even at my advanced age I can tell the difference between a man and a woman.

:hippy:

Here's another original and cover version,
First is by The Zombies, cover by Santana.
Which is best?
(this should not confuse even the terminally tin eared)

Well I'm going for the second one, mainly because I was only 3 when the first one came out (cough) … (how strange, my nose just got longer. )

I should mention Pat that you putting me onto Consider Phlebus got me hooked on Ian M. Banks and I'm now on Culture series book 8. It's like bloody crack cocaine ..

I read somewhere they're considering a TV series for this. Beats me how they'll film it.

Well Bob, I agree Santanas version is miles better, the Zombies sound like little boys.

As for Ian M Banks, Im glad you like his work, best sf I ever encountered and such a shame that there wont be any more. I have resorted to reading them all over again.

erimus 14th October 2018 11:47

Just had this from someone I was at school with 60+ years ago.....Long but worth a watch/listen to.

THIS RUNS FOR QUITE A FEW MINUTES ?? BUT IT IS WORTH WATCHING . . . . .

The day the music died!

American Pie.

Although Don McClean only released the song in 1971, for those of us who grew up in the 50’s and 60’s this is a great piece with some very poignant moments in the history of those times. And for those of you who did not, it’s a taste of what you missed! I knew that "American Pie" was the name of the plane in which Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper were killed when it crashed in 1958 – and I knew the chorus about music dying on that day. I have listened to American Pie for many years and I thought I understood what was being sung but now realise that I didn’t!

However, when the words are put together with pictures and film clips the song takes on a new meaning. It took a lot of thought to produce this and it brings back lots of memories and also makes the lyrics really come alive!

There's something a bit screwy about the link Geoff but I found the clip (I think.) I'm still a bit gobsmacked at 1971 … it doesn't seem that long ago …

First heard on Radio London in 1966, and in later years on BBC Three Counties Radio on Sunday evenings. You knew you were going to hear some great songs and some entertaining banter from old Cardboard Shoes himself, Keith Skues!

Jolly Jack 24th October 2018 16:49

Thanks for the link Geoff. I've told my children and G/children that I felt lucky to be there at the birth of Rock 'n Roll. To me it was like a breath of fresh air. Buddy and The Crickets were my favourite group/band and I admit to shedding tears on 3/2/59 aged 16.
When I could afford to buy a Fender Strat. guitar, I got the re-issue of the 1957 Tobacco Sunburst one as seen on the Chirping Crickets LP. I had that album back then and only recently got a replacement one off ebay.

Thanks for that one...we were staying in Bristol,at a Conference, many many moons ago and he was there for a gig.....when he had returned to hotel he came and played a couple of his best pieces then disappeared for the night.

Here's the cover version by the group of the same name.

I like the raw simplicity of the first version, but the second slower version is more atmospheric. The band played this as their sign out song at a live gig.

Dartskipper 26th October 2018 22:47

I first heard this in the summer of 1967, on Radio London before that great station went off the air for all time. It refreshes so many memories, not least because my nickname at school in those days was Jack.

Of course, the Teenage Opera never did get completed.

Which one of these appeals more?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-ikfwXOtqE

(Art Garfunkel.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvzN...7KdRoaCWmEe8jU

(The Flamingos.)

I like them both, but I think the 1959 Doo Wop approach just edges it.

BobClay 27th October 2018 10:35

Have to be honest, neither is very appealing. Especially compared to Frank Sinatra's rendition. :smoking:

First by Hank Snow;

Second by The Travelling Willburys
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SqF56nj2LU

The question, which is the most revolting?

BobClay 27th October 2018 20:40

They seem diabolically similar to me …. (it's the same link ) ….:big_tongue:

But when it comes to maudlin …. (this used to make my old dear cry, but when I heard it I just wanted to climb the nearest church tower with a rifle ...)

I fixed it Bob. Listening to it again, I reckon that the Travelling Willbury's version is possibly the worst track they ever made, and thats saying something!:pint:

BobClay 28th October 2018 09:15

Thanks for fixing it Pat … (sort of.)

The odd stop/start bits and some of the guitar playing is fascinating, and the shots of the audience dancing is very cheerful.

I used to think that was the greatest song involving drink until this came along:

(It mentions Lonnie but where??)

Dartskipper 30th October 2018 18:46

We have had some really morbid and dreary songs lately, and Tom posted some good old drinking songs. This one combines both themes!

Pat Kennedy 30th October 2018 19:53

Talking about drinking songs, here's one which describes comprehensively the worst hangover you ever had.
Although it was supposed to be about taking LSD it fits any kind of horrible hangover, especially one you get after drinking too much Dr Penfold's.

Kenny Rogers and the first edition feat Glen Campbell on guitar.

Pat Kennedy 30th October 2018 20:02

Lets have some one hit numbers.
Here's my favourite, by Norman Greenbaum, a massive hit in 1969, Greenbaum never had another hit record.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZQxH_8raCI

BobClay 30th October 2018 20:36

Yeah that is strange … because that number was a true classic.

One hit wonder ? :flowers: … but if it's going to be a 'one hit,' it was a good one to go out on.
