Well it all went tits-up for me 12 days ago.
Can't remember if I've already mentioned, but I had a quad bypass following a heart attack, 8 years ago. Went to the docs 13 days ago, generally feeling odd in the upper body but also my BP was high 165/110. Despite my previous history she wasn't unduly worried and suggested a blood test (possible virus). Anyway I wake up in the early hours of Wednesday to go for a pee and think I know what this pain in my chest is. Ambulance to the hospital and blood tests confirm I've had a heart attack. One thing and another plus weekend resulted in it being Monday before I had an angiogram. The good news was that that grafts put in 8 years earlier were as good as new. The bad news was that they couldn't find the cause of the MI (probably due to the time taken and the blood thinning drugs) and there was new damage to the left side of my heart. At home taking things easy, waiting for the call for the rehab classes. Take care out there guys! |

Big allergic reaction to the medications this week. Body doesn't like the beta-blockers. My pulse went down to 41 bpm. Doctor took me off them and its taken 6 days for it to come back up to a sensible level.
Also had severe muscle cramps as a result of statins. Had this the previous time I was on them. So also off them for the moment. It's not like my cholesterol is ever high, so they will have difficulties persuading me to go back on them in any form. |
I know a doctor, a former professor of pharmacology at the University, who will not take statins for his high cholesterol. He quotes medical literature that shows studies that people die just as quickly if they take them as if they don't. He also cites bad side effects as one of his reasons for not taking them. I looked up a couple of his references, and he was right. (You might find some of these references on google. The next time I see him, I'll ask for their names.) I won't take statins either. My family doctor said, "Okay, then I'm sending you for a stress test, and if it shows up any abnomalities, you're taking the statins." Stress test came back normal.

Some years ago, following a routine blood test for her diabetes, my wife was prescribed statins because, she was told, her cholesterol level was too high. By the end of the second week of taking them she had such severe muscle pains that she could barely walk 10 metres. Back to the doctor's and demanded to know just how serious her cholesterol level was. The reply came back that her level was 4.1 mmol/l.
"What is the acceptable level" was her next question. "For someone with diabetes, not exceeding 4.0 mmol/l" came the reply. "You mean that I have been suffering all that pain for 0.1 mmol/l? You can go take a running jump." She threw the pills in the bin and was walking normally and painlessly within days. Needless to say she has never taken statins since. |

See #1 for update. Bad fortnight. Too much eating last weekend and too many leftovers following. No batteries in the sphygmomanometer until this afternoon.
(Pissed on Thursday - third time in a year - fell & banged 'good' knee. Friday favourite chair swivel shaft - about 12 mm steel bar - sheared dumping me backwards on the floor. Yesterday boiler packed up - bugger. I say again, bugger). |

Into trundle-trundle machine. Trundle-trundle until decent dough. 2 hours or so to prove depending on temp. Into two round tins. Leave to rise. 50 minutes at gas mark 8. And if you think shop bought Rye bread makes you fart wait until you try mine. Oops. Add to flour a sherry glass of vegetable oil. |
