David, my good man, potter away. Should your collection of time pieces attain magnificent proportions, I'm sure we can find a suitable space for the collection. Like in a special museum certified UV protective glass case with controlled internal atmosperic pressure, humddity, etc. Something not too ostentatious, say about 100 feet long and 10 feet high behind the bar in the pax lounge. We might even create the position of Clockswain to attend to the daily wind-up. :bounce:

Yup! And that's before you put her into gear!! Sweet!!:jump:

Farmer John 31st July 2017 09:29

I currently wind eight timepieces, all but two of them every day. I like the sound of Clockswain.

Varley 31st July 2017 10:55

Alas. A ship as both Harrison and Maskelyne knew well is not a place for the pendulum which figure in the majority of my specimens. Only the ship's masters would work and I have only two of those. And, equally alas I have no slot for a Windwain or Clockswain. The pendulums are all electrically reset gravity arm or Hipp toggle movements and the ship's masters are electronic or mainly so.

Anyway thanks for the shore pass and ditty bag I'm off to see what I can find.

Dartskipper 31st July 2017 21:52

I'm sure there's a pendulum clock on the bulkhead above the snooker table in the crews' mess.

Farmer John 31st July 2017 22:44

Snooker and pendulum clocks just need some faith. I have a photo somewhere of a set of 9 spot dominoes balanced on two dominoes, and that was on a Laser.

Chittagong, so good they named it twice.

Oh! Ye of little faith -- I'm sure that Tmac can knock up a very reliable gyroscopically stabilised, inertia controlled device to maintain the required gravitational stability required by your pendulums? We could even fit in a couple of bunks to afford absolute peace and quiet for those who have over imbibed., Hic! :pint:

billyboy 1st August 2017 10:46

Oh yes he can knock anything off for you. seen him knock off three barmaids in the same night before now.

Varley 1st August 2017 11:04

I can't afford that amount of that filthy hooch of which he is too fond. You also have the sleeping comfort all wrong. I am thinking of a seagoing bunk simulator for more comfortable shoreside sleeping with long deep rolling necessitating the wedging in of sleeper with lifejacket.

How much more comfortable for the wrinkly than a PLC operated pneumatic anti-bedsore matress with a natural movement to keep the body turned (probably still need a few of the former for the seasick wrinklies).

No money required, Varley. Unbeknownst to many, there are two wing tanks in way of #4 refrigerator access hatch, (like so many other things not shown on the official plans), These are maintained in pressed-up condition with Black Bush so we can keep his Royal Oiliness happy for eons.

From the sound of your preparedness, you probably also wear your oilskins, sea boots, and sou'wester in the shower so you don't get wet?? :jester:

Varley 2nd August 2017 10:19

No point in that Tom. Quite wet enough inside already to bother with such a strange sartorial perversion (I did, however turn my pipe upside down to prevent it sogging the dottle).

billyboy 2nd August 2017 11:00

you stick with the gripetine Varley!...your the only man aboard who can drink it by the pint. Way too strong for little old me.

Tmac1720 2nd August 2017 17:32

One clock/crinom...crenome....creinom...bloody time keeping thinmgy mounted on fluid gimbals as requested courtesy of your "friendly" injuneering staff (+ rat and squirrel) :jester:

If I find anybody pressing up my tanks there will be swift and terrible retribution extracted from the presser or pressee .:really_mad:

Now I'd pay money to see that :jester:

His "Royal Oiliness" can make "Good Morning" sound like a threat and in my case it probably will be...:jester:

How would you expect him to react...He caught you shaking hands with his wife Tmac!

Farmer John 3rd August 2017 22:52

When do we move alongside in Chittagong? I'm looking forward to a good curry and a stroll down the posh parts of town. It's all very well being a busy port, but we do have some cargo to throw out, sorry, offload.

billyboy 4th August 2017 06:33

Hmmm the port scenery seems to be slowing down nicely. Fenders out on the port side cutouts.
2 and 1 each end when we are alongside. get the gangway out soon as you are done and run the shore supply cable when you can. Tmac needs a bit peace and quiet so he can rest before a run ashore later.
Oh I can smell the Curries from here!
Best get some booze down us first as it never seems to taste right after eating curry.

ssr481 5th August 2017 00:36

Hmmm... after finishing my celebrations of the Lads winning the Stanley Cup.. um, where are we??

billyboy 5th August 2017 01:58

Think Tom said it was S**ttersgone, or something like that. seems odd going to a place with no bathroom though...LOL

The Golden Dreamer is in Chittagong -- we are down #1 hold, putting the final touches to he ice surface with the Zamboni in ppreparation for an "Old Timer's" hockey game -- anyone over 60 years old with a pulse can play this non-contact (Oh! Yeah! Right!) sport. SSR -- we need a goalie, if you are up to it?? Game set up with the locals- the Chittagongonians. Free beer for all participants (Dom Perignon for the ladies) :pint:

YM-Mundrabilla 5th August 2017 07:56

Will the ladies be playing or do they all fail the age limit?

billyboy 5th August 2017 08:39

Noooooo! our ladies are much too young to qualify for Ice Hockey old timers. (they would probably kill the opposition anyway.

billyboy 5th August 2017 08:45

TANNOY: all crew to the PAX lounge for a meeting please.

Are you all here?
Right then,
It is with a very heavy heart that I have to inform you all that Peter, Husband of CED has crossed the bar.
I respectfully ask you all to keep our beloved engineering superintendant CED in your thoughts and prayers as she copes with this very sad time in her life. Thank you.

Tmac1720 5th August 2017 12:12

Tragic and so very sad news Sire. The injunroom crew will stand a silent watch in his honour. Any of the crew is welcome to join us on the Tank Top at 8 bells.

billyboy 6th August 2017 00:54

you can count me in on the silent watch Tmac. Respect.

Tom Alexander 6th August 2017 06:15

Our Ensign respectfully lowered to half staff. Deck lights dimmed. A time for us all to reflect on our mortality and the contribution of our loved ones to our lives. And, Tmac, I will be honoured to join you and your injuneering crew on the tank top at 8 bells to commiserate with CED on her loss.

Farmer John 6th August 2017 10:00

I will be joining you.

billyboy 6th August 2017 11:36

I have cancelled my going ashore out of respect. I have had Varley wire the local hotel and they will be delivering our curry meals to the ship.
'We will just have a quiet time alongside for a few days and behave like Gentlemen.
However I think at "Up spirits time" (splicing the main Brace) we should have a toast to the late Sir Peter. s fine a Scottish gentleman as ever there was.

To the late Sir Peter: Cha bhithidh a leithid ami riamh. (His equal will never be among us again.) :pint:

billyboy 7th August 2017 09:30

I'll drink to that Tom....Cheers...to Peter.

Varley 7th August 2017 11:49

I hope the passing was as painless as possible. Of course I'll raise my glass to him.

Tom Alexander 8th August 2017 05:54

On a lighter note -------- HAPPY 30TH. BIRTHDAY, SIR SIDNEY OF CROSBY There you go SSR Glad to see he took the Olde Mug to his home town today. :jump:

We can drink a toast to him as well. :pint:

Farmer John 8th August 2017 17:20

Do we have any cargoes waiting? It's rather warm in Chittagong.

No cargo here, Farmer John, but I did have a visit from a rather non-descript Indian gentleman on the quay while I was checking our draughts (NO, NO, NO, I am not talking about our beer - just how much ship is actually in the water at present).

He suggested we could pick up a cargo of Rutile (1,500 short tons) in Richard's Bay in South Africa, and take it to the Electric Boat Company facility in Groton, Connecticut. As "earnest" he handed me a well stuffed unmarked brown envelope which turned out to contain several thousand U.S. $$ just as a down payment -- the balance on delivery. Although this project, as usual, is utter hush-hush, the gentleman did indicate the Rutile cystaline structure was being considered for switching elements in the boats nuclear/heavy water circulation structure, or alternatively for use in the guidance of torpedoes. It was conveyed that it was all experimental at present. :brain:

billyboy 9th August 2017 11:13

Nice one Tom. Love these mystery jobs heh heh heh.

Farmer John 9th August 2017 18:00

Rutile, you have to drag in that elegant and apposite word, chatoyancy. Always rather liked it.

Dartskipper 9th August 2017 20:44

Chatoyancy.

Sounds like a little perfunctory conversation while floating in a hot tub....:supercool:

billyboy 10th August 2017 04:34

anything to do with the Chatanooga choo choo?
