#180 - sorry to be a PITA but that picture was taken on 10th October 1955.
It was the occasion of a goodwill visit by six Russian (Soviet) warships to Portsmouth. A deputation went to London and laid a wreath at the cenotaph, they then went to Dartmouth where 100 Russian cadets were taking part in an exchange. The picture shows Admiral Golovko with Admiral Sir George Creasy on HMS Victory. As a result of certain observations made by the Royal Navy on this visit they took the opportunity to ‘have a look’ below the waterline when Bulganin and Khrushchev visited the following spring. The rest is history. |
