Not sure that this is the correct place for this question but hopefully it will do.

I recently came across one of my photos as being credited to a source called 'Photoship'.
I am unable to find any internet reference or link to Photoship.
Has anyone any knowledge of 'Photoship' as a source of maritime photos, please?

There used to be a company called fotoship who did aerial photos in the Dover Straits like fotoflite used to do. Maybe them?

There's also a website called shipphotos.co.uk.

Photoship no longer exists. I don't remember the reason. A shame really. If you wondered what a ship looked like there was a good chance you would find a picture there. All in alphabetical order. Hundreds of thousands photographs. I think you would need more than a week to go trough all of them. I still miss that site.

I had the same experience with one of my pics from another site

Photoship.co.uk was a website active from 2006 until last year, as far as I can tell.
Yes, there are pictures on the internet credited to ‘photoship’ and it appears that is not an actual photographer, which suggests a widespread breach of copyright.
Perhaps that is why the site went down.

The site seems to be working. I got to it by Googling 'photoship'. It's 'About' page gives me:

I can see company ships of the 90s but not much earlier.

It's not the same site, David. The original site had photographs much older than that and it was named photoship.co.uk and not shipphoto.co.uk.

Skyphotos based in Ashford,Kent were the Dover Straits ship specialists when there was a Merchant Navy.

Ceased trading in 1989.

Sorry, I didn't notice Google had taken me to Ship photo.

A couple of years ago the web site closed then it opened a page on Facebook where it was selling a memory stick with their whole database but this page has now closed also.

It appears that Photoship no longer exists as some of you have said.

By way of background, the reason for my question was that whilst 'rummaging' some maritime websites I was reminded of the brilliant site Tyne Tugs etc. (www.tynetugs.co.uk)

Just for fun, I looked up photos of the former famous Melbourne tug James Paterson (J. P. Rennoldson 1902) where there are six photos. Three of these are credited to 'Buster Browne', two to Allan Green (well known Melbourne maritime photographer) and finally the colour pic is mine but credited to Photoship.

The attribution 'Buster Browne' sounds dodgy to me and I think that his three credits are all, in fact, Allan Green photos.

Personally, I am not fussed by any of this - rather more honoured to have a pic of mine on Tyne Tugs but I was just curious as to the credentials of the apparently now defunct Photoship.

In October last year Threebs posted a photograph of two Manchester Liners ships moored in No. 9 dock Manchester. Threebs attributed the photo to Manchester Docks Archives.
I was doing a Google search yesterday and the "same" photograph came up but had a Getty Images watermark blazened across the image.
It would seem that anything the goes out on social media or the web in general is classified as Public Domain and get's appropriated accordingly.
As happened in Melbourne and elsewhere in 2021, when the protesting anti-vaxxers were flying the Red Duster - albeit upside - but maybe they were in distress!

I came across another of my 1960s photos a while ago of Flavia at Port Melbourne on an English website whose name I no longer remember.

I think that the site was something to do with Liverpool but not sure. I could probably do an internet search for other copies of the photo ... if I knew how, of course! :jester:

I was intrigued at the time as to where they lifted the pic from. It was probably from the old SN but via who knows?

As I said above, I am happy to share my photos with anyone who is interested but it is the 'intermediaries' who traffic photos as their own that annoy me.

The Red Duster, like so many decent and respected things, seems to have been hijacked by various elements of society for their own ends. I wonder if they have any idea of the associated history, background and sacrifice behind it? I suspect not and that they are simply attracted to the red background colour as a perceived insult to the blue National flag.

Anybody know where Threebs is? See nothing been posted by him lately and he always had such good quality photos.

His latest visit was on 27th April.

He's been in and out of hospital with a major heath issue - Severe difficulty breathing.
Prognosis unfortunately not good.
Then he had problems accessing his computers - That was a bit easier to sort.
Last we heard he was waiting for a home lift to be installed.

We wish him well. We miss him.
