Ships - Naming of......

A point of discussion perhaps. HMS Prince of Wales, given Charlie’s attitude toward the RN ( eg His former command, and antipathy towards its fate). Could the 2nd carrier have had a better name? KGV? Hood? I realise the HMS PoW was a great battleship. But ultimately, the ship is named in honour of a Naval Great?

When Brenda pops her clogs we will have a new PoW. A Crab in fact.

There have been 6 or 7 vessels of that name, some, like the KGV Class Battleship during WW2,had a great history before being sunk off China.

I don't think the Admiralty will ever name another ship "Hood."

Could have had Rodney or better still Nelson, just to tease our European allies!

I've often wondered if Captain Johnny Walker didn't deserve a ship being named after him. He played a significant part in winning the Battle of the Atlantic, and that's one battle that if lost, meant the war was lost.

That unsporting diminutive admiral has had a class and at least one battleship named after him. While I am pleased that Duncan remains a current front line warship I wouldn't like him to fall behind the little fellow in the naming ranks just because the frogs got in a lucky shot. Trafalgar was all very well but the Frenchies and the rebel Hibernians would have been facing us from across the Irish Sea had not Camperdown hashed their potatoes. Not to mention how Aboukir Bay would have turned out without the lesson in tactics (and that would be sad, you can't take it from Nelson that sound of L'Orient leaving the battle could be heard in Cairo).
