Whitby bargain?

A replica of the Endeavour is to be auctioned on Monday.

I bet this could be a both a great opportunity and a money pit.

Local Teesside businessmen hoping to buy and leave her on Corporation Quay.....if buyer from non -Tees then job would be getting her through the bridges and then Whitewater Locks into main river.

The Teesside Princess could do both as a pleasure craft and understood that she may end up in the Thames as a houseboat.

I spoke to her builder just a few weeks ago, he was at one time a fellow employee of Smiths Dock's and started up his own Shipbuilding Yard on the Tees when Smiths went down the pan, at the time I was curious about the type of steel she was built with bearing in mind her age and that she is confined to her Berth due to changes on the river since she was built and is now in the same situation as HMS Kellington was.
Looking at the Lock alongside the Barrage there is a slight kink on the approach to the Lock from the up river end which I would have thought would have stopped this vessel getting through and the same reason why the Kellington could not be taken elsewhere to be scrapped.
I cannot see her being moved from her present location but I could be wrong.

Sold for £110,000, rumoured to be making a move, or more correctly being moved. It doesn't sound like a lot, estimate is £250,000 to move her.

Apparently, according to The Gazette, the buyer, from North East, wishes to remain anonymous for time being whilst decision is made on location. The Teesside Princess, however, will not be leaving the Tees as intended to keep her as pleasure boat, with local owners.

Up to date info...buyer was a partnership from Whitby, led by local,ex RN,man Andrew Fidler.
The vessel will be having £750,000 spent on her in repairs and refurbishment prior to arrival in Whitby in the Spring of 2018. The Gazette says this work will be done in Stockton but Radio Tees interview says Middlesbrough.....don't know anything about de-masting/re-masting and logistics of getting her through the Whitewater Lock....but should be fun to watch!

Andrew Fidler has other experience of Endeavour related participation as he was on the 'Endeavour 90' circumnavigation ...2018 is the 250th Anniversary of Cook setting sail from Portsmouth to see the transit of Venus at Tahiti etc...

It will be used as a tourist attraction and Centre of Learning through Coastal Communities Fund and the NY Moors National Parks.

You are quicker than the local press, but then most things seem to be.

I really hope this works out well, it is going to cost quite a bit. There really could be no place better suited for this. Looking at the photos, if the Wheel is anything to go by, it does need some sorting out.

Interesting that they have to crane it out.

Let me know.

BobClay 18th October 2017 21:29

I'll try and keep an eye on her progress, or any reports that appear on the sites.:thumb:

Purchased for approx. £155,000.00
Cost to move approx. £250,000.00
Cost of restoration approx. £750,000.00

Deep pockets, I hope.

All the best to all involved, but I hope it doesn't end in tears.

billyboy 18th October 2017 22:38

I live just down the road, I meant, let me know if you do come up to see it. I'll dance up some bad weather.
