Another question, cueball, if you'll be so kind.

As you know, I'm writing an novel for young Adults, and I'm unsure of the right term in this sentence:

"Her superstructure was curved and her funnel set slightly back of midship."

Should it be "midships", that is, with an "s"?

Thanks.

Hi Mary. I would choose 'Amidships'.

Thanks, as always, cueball. So this is how it shoud read?

her funnel set slightly back of amidships.

Or you could put 'her funnel set slightly astern of amidships'

mary75 15th March 2018 20:07

Cueball, I like that even better. Will use 'her funnel set slightly astern of amidships'.
Many thanks!

Sorry to get in so late on this one, but I think the normally accepted version should be "slightly aft of amidships". Aft denotes anything that would be considered "behind" (Not behind as in hidden behind) something else on the ship" by a landlubber. "Astern" is usually only used for something that is behind the whole ship, as in another vessel, island, etc. Hope this helps.

Tom.
