Cod Wars 2021?
 

With departure from the EU, is there a possibility of another ‘Cod War’?
I am aware there was a bit of fisticuffs recently, with the French fishermen.
Is there a likelihood or are the limits clearly delineated and agreed?
Second point, having just seen a You Tube video, which showed som3 of the various RN vessels involved. I was not aware the T21s were involved! I thought it was mainly ‘older’ frigates, HMS Mermaid, and Leander’s.
There was also a shot of the ocean going tug Lloydsman (think she went to the Falklands too), so commercial vessels were involved as well?

The French fishermen have always looked at British vessels with a jaundiced eye. Due to the disputed quota system there have always been disputes over the Channel fishing grounds. I remember seeing a large crabber returning to Dartmouth with broken windows in the wheelhouse many years ago, after working grounds off the Normandy coast as was its legitimate right to do so.

The damage was done by flying hammers and adjustable wrenches, not bad weather.

Sadly, it will only continue.

1970's cod wars! I cannot remember the warships involved but we handled all the radio traffic to the
vessels - Miranda/GULL - Lloydmans - Irishman and possibly the Yorkshireman was there at some time. Irishman had an altercation with the Icelandic gunboat Ardvakur.

For clarification, the United Towing tugs involved in the Cod war were Lloydsman and Statesman.

The United Towing tugs in the Falklands conflict were Salvageman, Yorkshireman and Irishman. Lloydsman was not involved, having been replaced by Salvageman some years earlier.

Lloyds Man was built 1971. At time of Falklands she would have been 11 years old

Same age as the Diplomats in the F&C Office.

That's right. She was sold as a going concern to Semco and changed her name to Salviscount. Her replacement was Salvageman which was a large, 4 engine, anchor handling and deep sea tug built in Hong Kong in 1980. She had the distinction of being one of the longest serving ships in the Falklands Task force working around the Falkland s for around 2.d tears and was very involved, together with the United tug Yorkshireman, in the salvage work and eventual scuttling of the Argentine submarine Santa Fe in Grytviken, South Georgia.
