Crew Lists for SS St Petersburg 6 August 1914

I am researching an old family tale that an ancestor was master of the ship which ferried the German ambassador and staff over the British Channel from Harwich at the outbreak of the first world war.

Can anyone advise on where I might find the crew list for an individual journey?

Maritime Museum records seem to start at 1915.

SS St Petersburg was owned by Great Eastern Railway - and the likely candidate is listed as an employee in 1915 - on a different ship (SS Copenhagen), same route, and as master.

Hello Ed,
The 1914 crew agreement for ST PETERSBURG official number 123940 is held at the Maritime History Archive in NewFoundland.

You can contact them in the first instance via email and ask them. There will be a charge to copy any documents you may require. Is it Luke Richmond you are looking for?

Thank you very much indeed. I am most grateful.

Yes it is Luke Richmond.

My father was told this tentatively when he was a child but we never knew whether this was just a made up story.

Hoping to find out a bit more!

Hi Ed, If you also obtain BT 165/990 from the National Archives in Kew which contain official logbooks for various vessels including ST PETERSBURG for the time period you want. The master at the time would have signed the logbook so either way you should have an answer.

Ship's name St. Petersburg Official Number 123940 Date of Voyages 5 July 1914 - 12 November 1914 and 2 January 1914 - 30 June 1914.
