AW Ship Management and Andrew Weir & Company Ltd

An update, probably late, about the two outfits in the title. E & OE by the way.

AW Ship Managment is, as its name suggests, a ship management company based in the city of London. Originally it was known as AWS which many people, me included ,thought was Andrew Weir Shipping but it was not. The only connecion with Andrew Weir was that much of the AWS team were ex Andrew Weir staff. However, AW Ship Management also run Andrew Weir Yacht Management which leaves be a bit baffled.

Andrew Weir and Company Ltd has nothing to do with shipping (supposedly), it is a finance and investment company based apparently in or close to Oxford. This is interesting since the current Lord Inverforth - Andrew Peter Weir - lives in or near Oxford and is a sugeon in that city, if the information is correct. If not, then apologies. What is interesting is that one of the management team is Viscount Runciman and as many of you will know Runcimans were big players in the shipping world in days gone by!

I just assumed there was a management buyout and the Weir family bailed out of shipping but basic ownership of shipping interests is always a bit of a minefield. They might have been better off to have floated the company in the late 70s when the then Baron Inverforth died unexpectedly. The next generation didnt quite have the instincts for it, often the case with a family business down the generations.

It is often said that a first generation starts a business, the second generation builds it up and the third generation pisses it up against a wall.

Also interesting to note is that AW Ship Management is wholly owned by Hadley Shipping company.

Who owns Hadley Shipping? It's a private family business but I didnt think the Weirs had anything to do with it.. I assume they own Foreland Shipping too.

Hadley Shipping Group Ltd currently lists eight directors, none named Hadley.
Some of those are also listed under AW group Companies and also Foreland.
Need to dig a little deeper to find out who owns what.

When I went to see if I should apply for the new MoD RoRo vessels (Anvil Point etc.), although it was advertised as AWS, it was Foreland Shipping. The meeting/presentation was in the Holiday Inn, Paradise St., Liverpool. I just cannot remember what year it was. I was also offered, at the same time, a 3/E job - The missus intercepted the letter went ballistic! Once you have swallowed the anchor, that is it!

Rgds.

Hadley Shipping Group wholly owns AWS, Foreland Shipping and the Hadley Shipping Company.

There have been no Hadley's involved for many years, although the current owners are generally related to each other.

It should be noted that the Weir family have no connection to any of these companies, having sold out to HSG in 2014. AWS stands for AWS and nothing else.

I am obliged for the contributions, it all helps an ancient mariner understand things better!
