Hi Twiggy, you're bloody lucky you did not call them "Boats", Laker would have had a fit, his face would turn cherry red, , he would start foaming at the mouth and fall over backwards..
I'll have to give you 100 lines. Get your pencil and jotter and write out 100 times:-

"Ships I sailed on", or better still, "Ships I have sailed on"

This could be an introduction to the exciting world of Grammar, Syntax and Vocabulary.

Never mind Twiggy, I think that the grey funnel wallahs use 'in' rather than 'on' - and there are quite a few of that breed hereabouts.

Hmmm So cargo is carried 'IN' and personnel are carried 'ON'


Now do engineers serve 'in' or 'on' the engineroom, as a navigator I am on the bridge but in the wheelhouse


Then we have 'all hands on deck' or if unfortunate 'all hands in the boats'


I served 'in' the Merchant Navy and the ships I sailed 'on' ……………….

We'll our less professional brothers do have boats. To be on a boat would, for most of its service, be most hazardous (one hopes, surely we do not finance submarines for them to lounge all day on the surface). Therefore it is safer for them to serve in. Anyway, we should allow them to serve wherever they like to serve providing they come to our aid when we need them.

I'm dual nationality, British and Irish, as are millions on the Island of Ireland. Probably a bit like the French in Canada.
As for sailing under the European flag, I only do it because it gets up Varley's nose. He's not over fond of the Europeans and lukewarm on the Irish, as for the Canadians...….. I'm not sure.

Commonwealth peoples are fine. By definition. Unsure why they should want anything to do with us after we joined with the frog and djago (I would not have joined. Leaving is altogether different). As for Hibernia - One lot is terribly loud and claim Britishness in a rather unBritish sort of way. Then other lot make smells in church and are 'hail fellow, well met'. Until the potato crop fails and then all hell breaks loose.

Where was I hiding???? There was no place to hide, every spare cabin had a Sparky in it. What the hell did 3 Sparks do every day? On most ships even one was bored, very bored. Did the ship have an Auto Alarm?
I believe you carried 90-odd passengers but...…. Did you carry a Doctor? or a Nurse? (Nurse, Certificated Engineers for the use off).
What a life, Banana Tutti Fruity's every evening and rum punch. Give us an auld paragraph on life onboard. Please.

Both, dear fellow, plus around 100 passengers and a slightly greater number of crew. Sailed on Tuesday afternoon for a nine-day trans-Atlantic crossing, passing through the Azores to arrive Bridgetown, Barbados on a Thursday morning, where we spent 8 to 10 hours at anchor. The Royal Mail and departing passengers went ashore by boat, and any passengers that were joining for other ports of call came aboard the same way.

Then overnight at sea, to arrive in Port of Spain, Trinidad early on the Friday morning. There we spent half a day alongside (and the dhobi was done by the Trinidad Steam Laundry - an opening for you there ES if you had a steam ticket). Passengers and any general cargo were landed and passengers for Jamaica or the UK joined.

Left there in the evening and spent Saturday and Sunday at sea en route Kingston, Jamaica, where we bunkered and then landed passengers and general cargo on the Monday morning.

Sailed late Monday or Tuesday morning and visited various places along the North coast of Jamaica (e.g. Bowden/Port Morant, Oracabessa, Ocho Rios, Montego Bay and occasionally others) loading bananas, normally finishing up on Tuesday morning in Port Antonio. There we completed loading bananas and took on board passengers for the UK, sailing later that evening to arrive Southampton or Avonmouth on Sunday, after a 10-day great-circle Atlantic crossing via the Grand Banks. Depending on arrival time, passengers were landed either that day or on Monday morning. Discharging the banana cargo commenced on the Monday and was completed by the following Monday, so she was ready to sail for Barbados again next day.

Roughly 28 day trips to the Caribbean with 10 days back in the UK every trip. Good accommodation, absolutely first class food, cocktail parties, films and horse racing in the passenger lounge, swimming pool, plenty of ladies - what could persuade anyone to leave that ship? Just one thing, sadly MIMCo needed my sterling services elsewhere and they paid my wages, so that most definitely could persuade me.

If you mean the French speakers who are mainly in Quebec they are still Canadians although many would like to separate from Canada. They have had two referendums about this and it was voted to stay (many in the rest of Canada (ROC) hoped they would leave.
This a sore topic at the moment during a Federal election later this month. The citizens of Alberta are incensed the Quebec government vetoed the construction of a pipeline to transport their oil to tidewater causing massive layoffs in the oil sector. Instead, we import oil from countries that have human rights problems!!!!
There is resistance too from B.C. and again it is said this is causing dissension and court case after court case to stop the pipeline which we already have spent billions of dollars on being halted.

E-S ---- Where do we pay this Syntax ?? Do we pay it before we sin, during, or after?? Do we only have to pay it if we are caught ??? :cloud:
