SN Member Skeds & Special Events Stations on Amateur Radio Bands

I started this thread on SN, so no harm in having one here as well.
Feel free to publicise any upcoming special event stations or even arrange skeds with fellow SH members

cheers,
Andy

Just an early heads-up to advise that GB100GKU will be operational on the HF bands (10m through to 40m) between 1st and 28th July. This station commemorates the 100th anniversary of the long-range maritime radio service in the UK which started from a site at Devizes in 1920. The station developed into Portishead Radio which of course closed in 2000.

GB100GKU will operate mainly on cw from the home location of G4HLN (Burnham-on-Sea) although some SSB operation may well take place.

A special QSL card will be available to confirm all contacts. More info at www.portisheadradio.co.uk

Thanks for the info. G4MYD :thumb:

GB100GKU now active from my QTH in Somerset until 28th July. Keeping busy on 10m-40m with over 250 QSOs in the first couple of days. Some short-skip contacts made with plenty of G and GM stations on 17m and 20m. Operating cw only for the moment, although I will try some R/T working over the forthcoming weekend......

Can I pick this up on my Roberts Stream 93i ?

BobClay 4th July 2020 10:59

Here's a link just for ES. Ya can pick up most things on there. :p

Bah, Humbug.

I hoped it would be a photo of Sunshine from Mombasa. I picked up a full house there.

BobClay 4th July 2020 14:59

The Sunshine Bar on the Kilindini Road. Many a wanderer fell by the wayside there ...:big_tongue:

Engine Serang 4th July 2020 18:52

The Sunshine Night and Day Club.
Once visited rarely forgotten.
By the way this morse code lark has been overtaken by microchips and Hauwei 5G and semaphore.

BobClay 4th July 2020 22:01

Hauwei are not to my taste. :p

The Twente website reminded me of the Sonar Room on a Hunter Killer submarine.
Enjoy GB100GKU for the rest of the month.

BobClay 10th July 2020 12:39

I’ve heard you calling via the utwente SDR website on 7 MHz but can’t hear you on my own 7300 Rx. Being in North Cornwall I’m probably too close.

G4HLN 11th July 2020 22:37

Just an update on GB100GKU activity. 1086 contacts in the first 11 days of operating from 57 countries, all on cw so far. Conditions have been variable to say the least. Some exotic contacts from Peru, Colombia and Japan. Some inter-G contacts on 7 MHz and some short-skip propagation on 14 MHz occasionally. Plenty of ex-R/Os around too.

G4HLN 4th October 2020 12:46

Advance notice of another special event station - GB4CKS will be operating from the QTH of myself (G4HLN) between 1st-14th November to commemorate the 85th anniversary of the passing of Australian aviation pioneer Sir Charles Kingsford Smith (after whom Sydney Airport is named). He was lost when his aircraft "Lady Southern Cross" came down off the coast of Burma in November 1935.

My link to him is through my XYL, who is related to him through ancestry - so there is a family connection!

Operation will mainly be on cw on bands between 10m and 40m, with a special QSL card available for all contacts.

On November 13 and 14, 2021 the Greek Amateur Radio Team DX Plus will inaugurate a new annual activity weekend which remembers the Coast Radio Station services which were once found all over the world, a service which traced their history right back to the founding fathers of radio and most of which are no longer active.
The Greek team will be active for 48 hours with the callsign SX1SVA, remembering the Greek Coast Radio Station Athinai Radio, callsign SVA, and the team will be staffed by former SVA Radio Officers operating from one of SVA’s former sites.
The DX Plus team invite Amateur Radio Operators and Amateur Radio Clubs to join them in this new initiative and set up special event station representing the former Coast Radio Stations close to them. Clubs and individuals able to participate in this event are requested to indicate their activity to [email protected].
The aim of the event is to remember the memory of these former stations by “talking” to each other, other participating stations and other Radio Amateurs, as many stations as possible, but the event is also aimed at Short Wave Listeners and wireless operators who are QSL card collectors. The event will run on the HF bands using CW.
Further information about this new event can be found the event website.

I'm hoping to operate GB0GKB over the weekend, although my operating times will be limited.

Today is Morse Code day, and the birthday of Samuel Morse one of the inventors of the telegraph code. I passed the Morse test at South Shields Merchant Navy College in 1955. It was the second attempt. I failed my first test because of nerves and trembling hands. The second attempt went splendidly – hands rock-steady twenty minutes after I swallowed two purple hearts (Benzedrine tablets) sold to me by a sympathetic chemist down Ocean Road, for a florin.
