Recognize these?
 

Does anyone recognize the items in the two attachments?
One has been used as a candleholder, but I don't know if that was the original intent. About 8 inches tall, it is inscribed on its body with the letters
HMS
TBD
FERN

I have found reference to an HMS Fern, apparently a torpedo boat destroyer, built in 1897, decommissioned in 1919. Would this be something from that ship? It's use? The second photo is of a another item, also about 8 inches tall, and it appears to be something that would be handy in bar fight, but I have no idea what it is.

The second photo looks like a standard weight from the old balancing scale days … :smoking:

Item one looks like some upcycling of scrap.

Item two is one of a set of weights for use with weighing scales - see pic.

Pic 1 - The 'candle holder' is the end of a voice tube and a whistle/bung would fit where the candle now rests.
I would guess that it is one of many commemorative pieces made by a Tiffy to present (or sell!) to ex crew and the like.

The standard set of weights for that type is a 7lb, a 2lb and a 1lb.

1lb=1lb
2lb =2lb
1lb+2lb=3lb
7lb oneside+3lb (see above)the other=4lb
7lb one side, 2lb the other=5lb
7lb one side, 1 lb the other=6lb
7lb=7lb
7lb+1lb= 8lb
7lb+2b=9lb
7+2+1lb=10lb

So don't go looking for other weights up to 10lb.

The ounces were fully covered by 1oz, 2oz, 4oz, 8oz.
I was taught all permutations of Mum's scales just as soon as I learnt to read the numbers and add up - but you don't need any of that stuff nowadays.

Inscription on first item reads Fawn (rather than Fern).

If DKelley comes back he will no doubt correct his typo. :)

I still have my mothers old style scales and still use them, they are still very accurate.

And yes, it was HMS Fawn, not Fern. Haste makes waste, they say.
Sorry for the delayed thanks, by the way. I used to be, long ago, on a maritime list called MARHST-L, and on that one replies came directly to my email address, didn't have to log onto the site to see replies. Then I got busy, traveling and such, and didn't get back to Shipping History until this morning. I will also have to practice navigating the forums and stuff. Go lost, ran aground some this morning.
