Nortons

I have Nortons 360 anti-virus on my PC which seems to work OK.

I am very much of the mindset that 'if it aint broke don't fix it' and am thoroughly fed up with the sales pitch for Nortons 'Ultimate' which they tell me will fix no end of (previously unknown) problems supposedly slowing my machine down - all for only a $A 1.00/week.

Needless to say I am/was totally unaware of the issues they highlight and don't understand what they are or what they do.

Has anyone had any experience (good or bad) with Nortons Ultimate, please?

Did it speed your PC up and do all the other wonderful things that it claims?

Any advice will be appreciated as I am scared to try it on the basis that 'if it aint broke don't fix it'.

YM I share your pain, well at least your misgivings about Norton. In their favour I have to say they have never taken money out of my account without going through an exhaustive sales pitch and then with my approval. One of their compeditor's acted as if we had a joint account.
Having paid my annual subscription I was secure for another year, hurray.
Woops a daisy, all of a sudden I have 41779 issues on my system including system junk, browser junk, broken registry items and shortcuts. As with Cruise Lines this is nickle and diming and I am pissed off.

ES, so we do share something in common after all! :)

My symptoms exactly.

All we need to do now is to wait for the computerised brains to tell us what to do next.

I gave up with Norton and other subscription anti virus years ago.
On my Windows PCs I use Free Avast and Free C Cleaner - they both keep offering a paid for version but I just ignore them.
My main desktop is a Mac which ‘just works’ and is faster. No Anti virus installed and no problems. I am writing this on an iPad and the Mac will happily chat to it and compare notes.
Just for fun I occasionally fire up my Linux machine - also faster than the Win PC and also does not need anti virus.

ES, your comments about "add ons" reminded me of this clip on YouTube.

Malcolm G, I also use AVAST antivirus and C Cleaner (which gets rid of cookies, deleted files etc) have done for over ten years with no problems and as you say both are fee for the basic versions.

I use McAfee which is good and non-invasive on my personal laptop, not at all like my Corporate laptop which is so full of "corporate stuff" that it is almost unusable! McAfee also pop-up the occasional ads for issues which can be resolved with some other add on. I just ignore them and I have suites of HP stuff which does my checks and tweaks for free and also upgrades the firmware.

Yes, Geoff, if it isn't broken, do nothing and ignore the ads.

Rgds.

BTW, my eldest daughter, a dyed in the hair Apple person, always comments that my laptop is faster than a Mac! It was a darned sight less to buy, so good!

Four years and umpteen Win10 updates and my nifty laptop slowed from a canter to a crawl. I used - still use on its replacement - ESET's NOD32, backed up with a weekly check with "Superantispyware" and "Spybot". The replacement is a refurbished model of a similar age but much higher spec (but much lower cost) and does everything at a gallop.

Off topic, but next door's teenage daughrter was a dyed hair girl; different colours nearly every week. I had a row of garden pots with Dahlias and could usually pick one up and tell her "Your hair matches this one!"

I have Win11 on the HP and have had no problems either.

Malcolm G 10th October 2024 20:36

Gonna have to build a new PC - that runs Win 11.

I've garnered from Private Eye and Have I got News for You that if you are about to say or write something mildly controversial then liberally sprinkle everything with the word, "Allegedly".
Lets give it a go.
Allegedly it is kind of difficult to cancel an annual subscription to McAfee, allegedly. I'll say no more.

Thanks One and All.

I think that I will do nothing as I am pretty good at that and just plod along with my PC as it is rather than dreaming of what it might (or might not) be.

When in doubt do nowt!

Nortons: 'Would you like fries with that?
