The part nearest the camera, south of the harbour, is Weymouth. The part furthest from camera is Melcombe.
When it became a Borough it was called Weymouth and Melcombe Regis. The Regis part is from George III using it as a summer residence.
Later the Melcombe part was dropped even though the current town centre is in Melcombe.
The ship which brought the Black Death likely moored on the, more developed at that time, Weymouth side of the river.
