Given the peculiar setup on the original drive I would agree. At least, to recover any files on it I'd put it in an external dock drive on another computer to do so, but there seems to be something wrong with it which is preventing it being read properly.

A full re-install on a completely new drive if nothing else, would suggest the problem lies on the original disk, and not on any associated hardware in the machine itself. If that doesn't work, you have to start thinking there's something wrong outside the drive itself.
