Inman Line owned a "City of New York" but she wasn't built till 1861 and ran New York to Liverpool. Direct Glasgow - New York sailings were operated by the Glasgow and New York SS Co. They had a "New York" (1854, 2168 grt). She was wrecked 13 June 1858 on the Mull of Kintyre after leaving Glasgow for New York. Steamship speeds at this period were no more than 12 knots so New York to Glasgow would take about 11 days.
PS "New York" left Greenock on 12th June Cpt McMillan in command.
