The French have never respected UK limits. I posted elsewhere that some scallop trawlers from Camaret sheltered in Torquay when an Easterly blew in sometime in the 1980's. My schoolboy French got me invited on board, where the skipper of one showed me his chart of Lyme Bay. It had two lines clearly marked, one green, the other red. The green line was the official limit, the red one showed how far he could creep inside it without getting caught by the fishery protection boys. Also, the French have thrown the odd wrench or lump hammer through the wheelhouse windows of Devon based crab fishing boats plying their trade near the Channel Islands.

Maybe they're still fretting over losing the order for their sub-standard subs.
