Some years ago, following a routine blood test for her diabetes, my wife was prescribed statins because, she was told, her cholesterol level was too high. By the end of the second week of taking them she had such severe muscle pains that she could barely walk 10 metres. Back to the doctor's and demanded to know just how serious her cholesterol level was. The reply came back that her level was 4.1 mmol/l.

"What is the acceptable level" was her next question.

"For someone with diabetes, not exceeding 4.0 mmol/l" came the reply.

"You mean that I have been suffering all that pain for 0.1 mmol/l? You can go take a running jump."

She threw the pills in the bin and was walking normally and painlessly within days. Needless to say she has never taken statins since.

Never regret growing older. It is a privilege denied to many. Don't worry about old age - it doesn't last.
