In 1961 I was 3/O in Pinjarra where the Capt was John Wacher, it was his second command. In good times Pinjarra served the UK - Australian trade. 1961 was a lean year so we went where the cargo was, calling at various Indian ports on the way and loading mostly bulk grain on the return. We were sweating gently in Colombo when Canberra was on her maiden voyage including Mr Menzies and P&O's Chairman Sir Donald Anderson. Canberra had a little trouble in the Engine Room. Much to Capt Wacher's delight we were alerted to be ready to tow Canberra in if necessary, but sadly it wasn't. However Sir Donald decided to inspect his lowly cargo ship and stay for afternoon tea. The contrast of Canberra's air conditioned luxury and our hot wardroom made for a very brief visit. Capt Wacher had a fulsome obit in the The Times - another story.
