Graham Danton, who lectured at Plymouth Training College, told a story on his Sunday afternoon show, "A Date With Danton," on Westward TV many years ago. It was probably apocryphal, but memorable anyway.

Their Lordships at the Admiralty decided to abolish the fears of seafarers who objected to sailing on Fridays. A contract was drawn up specifying that a vessel to be named HMS Friday was to have her keel laid on a Friday, that she should be named and launched on a Friday, that she should undergo trials on a Friday, and that her maiden voyage should commence on a Friday.

The terms of the contract were strictly adhered to.

She sank.
