As recently discussed on the site, there is a register of Death At Sea. I forget the thread. Roger Griffith and Hugh S come to mind. You can search the post or PM them.
Death At Sea and subsequent burial to Davy Jones would be recorded in the log, and later reported to the DAS register (if I remember correctly!). Death on board with a nearby port with a British Consulate/Embassy would mean, as you say, landing the body for local interment or repatriation.
