I think you are right John, about what 'passed us by' 50 or more years ago. Back about 6 years ago, I happened upon a documentary on TV about Lorenze Hart, the lyricist of Rogers and Hart's work for musicals. It was a sad tale but their music was remembered by showing different artists doing R & H songs. The melodies were all known to me but they came across in a new light and it stirred my interest, even though some presentations were from singers of the '30s, with those very clipped voices from back then. I bought a Tony Bennett CD covering a lot of their songs and I love it although my wife wonders why!
