When I was on leave from RFA I always served with Kirkcudbright Lifeboat as Radio op and Navs. That was in the days before they were fitted with VHF and before the Coastguards became the comms stations. Although only some 50 miles from GPK it was virtually impossible to raise him during dark hours. I used GLV which usually gave me better reception on 2182. However on a couple of occasions GLV could hear me but I could not read him well at all. I asked if he could answer me with MCW. He did this although I cannot recall if I had to retune my Rx to the W/T band. It was very handy on those occasions and kept me informed of progress on our casualties.
