#1879 - Jeddah: I had my 21st. exiting Suez and arriving next day to Jeddah. I was banished to the bunkering station all day - alcoholic breath! I remember that the dock was rectangular and, at 45° from the portside, there was a mosque. All day, at each hour, the call to prayer. It was an ethereal sound, a sound of pleading and quite beautiful. At the end of bunkers, I was allowed topsides again for my dinner!

"Sparkie" did Jeddah in 1978.....followed by Dammam where all hands were delighted to find an armed guard on the gangway preventing us from going ashore.
Having sampled Jeddah.....you can take the word "delighted" literally.

The part nearest the camera, south of the harbour, is Weymouth. The part furthest from camera is Melcombe.
When it became a Borough it was called Weymouth and Melcombe Regis. The Regis part is from George III using it as a summer residence.
Later the Melcombe part was dropped even though the current town centre is in Melcombe.
The ship which brought the Black Death likely moored on the, more developed at that time, Weymouth side of the river.
