#2172 - Don't know much about modern warships, even less about modern Japanese warships, but I found the picture on the net. It's the Japanese destroyer Shiranui.

#2169 - Fascinating reading! Here is one Dude who has worked in No.3, albeit as Western Shiprepairers, in winter. An experience never forgotten.
The North End was a very violent and dodgy part of Birkenhead. All razed now. I, however, am from Leasowe, Wallasey. I made it a habit to try and visit every pub in the NE for one pint to "meet the people"! One day, at The Angel, I was accompanied by Huw O. T. and Iain S. McPH. Huw ordered a whisky & peppermint. The pub went quiet. I turned at the bar and said, to all, "He's Welsh and we all work for Blue Funnel!". That dissipated a possibly difficult situation! There were many, many characters! The one pub that I never visited was the "Blood Tub", the Pole Star. Looking back, it was a wise decision, but "What if?". So, the quiz does much more than simply get a point for answering! Rgds. I might be wrong. Anyway, for those having a go, don't be fooled into thinking those are gun ports, they are shadows.

#2173......answer.
Judge Percy Harris D.S.C. K.C. On January 27, 1945, while serving in the frigate HMS Keats, he was involved in operations that led to the sinking of U-boat 1051 in the Irish Sea. While the convoy was re-forming into two columns, another submarine, U-1172, having manoeuvred itself between them, attacked on the eastern side and sank three vessels. Keats was patrolling on the western extremity of the search plan when the 19-year-old Harris obtained a good contact using Asdic equipment, with which he was unfamiliar. The U-boat was attacked with a ‘Hedgehog’ anti-submarine weapon that comprised 24 mortar bombs launched into the air that would detonate on contact with a hard surface under the sea. U-1172 was sunk. Harris’s commendation noted that he ‘displayed outstanding efficiency and devotion to duty, remaining smartly at his post on and off for 36 hours’. The captain of Keats added: ‘This officer showed coolness and courage, although this was his first patrol being a temporary relief for the ship’s Asdic officer.’ https://www.telegraph.co.uk/obituari...s-who-won-dsc/ Last edited by Sparkie2182; 5th December 2022 at 20:44. |

Although I can't find the image with the flag in that position, I think the ship is the ill fated ERTUGRUL that ran onto rocks and sank with the loss of 500 + men.
