Athel Tankers
Any old Athel Line or Anco Tankers personnel drifting around this forum?
Would like to get in touch ahead of the Athelian Reunion in Liverpool in October. This is Doug Bay ... sailed with the fleet from 1965 through to 1975. |

Hi Sebe, good to hear from you.
I sailed on the Monarch back-end '69, when Ted Hughes was skipper, Eddie Lyons the Mate, Jim(?) Hutchins the 2/0 and myself as the 3/0. The apprentices were Cooper, Kinnaird and Ward. Ring any bells? |

Served my apprenticeship with Athel Line 1956-60 but at least a year as 3rd.Mate during that time. Used to go to the Reunions - indeed they appear to be still using the Athel House Flag I had made & donated many years ago. Now live 20 miles north of Perth, Western Australia Can anybody enlighten me re info on the next Reunion - when & where. Roger Harrison |

The grey cells are struggling a bit, but 'WOW' Williams was skipper on the Monarch and the mate was ex-Clan Line, but I don't recollect his name. On Chief, Carstairs was skipper, Andy Notman mate, me 2/0 and John Thurston 3/0. Not sure about Storm as I was only there three weeks coastal before being relieved by Matt McCourt at Kiel Canal. On the Knight, Billings was skipper, Haggard was mate, me 2/0 and Matt McCourt also 2/0. We also carried and ex Athel apprentice who had been a Kalamazoo salesman before returning to sea as extra C/0, but his name escapes me at present time, but I think he subsequently became pilot/superintendent with Dubai Petroleum. I think Humphries was one of the cadets on Monarch. Sebe (Colin Balderson) Last edited by Sebe; 28th April 2017 at 18:39. |

Hi Colin,
Like you, the "little grey cells" are fast receding as the memories begin to fade! I sailed with WOW, Carstairs, his son-in-law Telford, McCourt and Billings. I did the old Duke, Queen (17 months straight, incl 6 months "doing" Viet Nam on secondment to the US Navy). Then the Mere, Monarch, Laird, Queen (again!) Septre, Sovereign and Knight ... when the latter 3 were switched to Anco and the chemicals outward /edible oils homeward voyages began in earnest. Have you visited the "Tankers" forum on the old Ships Nostalgia website? Worth a visit - as there are 5 pages under Athel Line overseen by 'treve', who's collated all the Athel gen, and from where I got all the knowledge about the reunion, old names etc., Good talking to you ... All the best, Doug Last edited by Islay; 28th April 2017 at 20:48. |

Came along a bit later with the new vessels built in the early 70's. First trip was on the Anco Empress in 1974 and then continued through the merger with Pan-Ocean into the late 80's.
Think I may have sailed with Captain Hagger at some point on The Templar early 80's (If I'm thinking of the same person). Always interested in The Athel Boats and it's a pleasure to hear about the fore runners to the ships I sailed on. Jasper |

Hi Jasper,
Aye, you would have come in around the final chapter of Athel Line - as it was, nevertheless, welcome to this forum seeking friends from yesteryear! Were you aware of the Athel website? Try http://www.captain-taylor.com/Athel/Athel.htm ... it's filled with all sorts of goodies and data concerning Athel seaman. Yours Aye, Doug |
