Yes I have two on my so called bucket list. Both of which are expensive in their own rights so tend to get put to the back when looking for a destination.
1. A top class trip to the Monaco Grand Prix. Top hotel and good seats in Monaco. My wife is never too enthusiastic I am afraid. 2. A cruise - usually hate the idea - on the Aranui5 around the islands. 14 days island hopping and load discharge. The cruise is within reason but the airfares are out of this world. Even 7 hours from Oz/NZ to Papeete. Main airline ex UK would be Air France. Maybe I will investigate more. Neville |

Always wanted to visit Malta, sailed with a couple of men from there and they were good shipmates.

Road Town, Tortola, BVI.
I was there briefly in January 1975. It was nowhere near as developed as the US Virgin Islands across the Sound. Happy memories of a beautiful Island and welcoming people. I still have the place mats I bought in the Post Office. |

For me, to visit the Kure, Japan maritime museum and view the 1/12 scale or 26.3metre model of the IJNS Yamato. In my view the most beautiful warship ever built.

I used to run there with Booker Line in the late 70's. I was shocked to see how much it had been developed, when watching the damage from when the hurricane passed through. |

There are many places that I would like to go back to, so my bucket list is pretty full, but I have found that you can never go back. By that I mean nothing is the same. An example of this was when I returned to Auckland. New Zealand. I had nothing but happy memories when living there, but returning years later, the place and people had changed so much it spoiled my return. It may not affect others, but it certainly did me. I returned having taken early retirement following major heart surgery. I also wanted to take my son, who is disabled as am I these days. Having asked the doctor if I should go having recovered from the surgery he said it could be my only chance. My son has family from his mothers side in Australia, so we killed two birds with one stone. Not only had Auckland changed, but so had Sydney. I visited Sydney a lot when at sea visiting my ex wife before I brought her home on Canberra, and of course her family all of whom are still there. Once again, it was not as I remembered it. Yes, the Opera House was still there, Circular Quay and so on, but many other things had changed. That is not to say people should not return, but enjoy the place as it is now rather than expecting it to be as it was. Things had also changed when I returned to the village on the Isle of Wight where I was born and bred. I was away for ten years in total, and have never been accepted back into the village. It is as if I am an outsider. Life can be very strange.
There are a few places I have never been to, but would like to such as Rio de Janeiro and I would like to see the midnight sun, but could never afford a cruise that far north. And now, I could not go anyway both health wise and financial. Therefore, I rely on memories, and what better place to do that than here on SH

Here is one of the Midnight Sun at the North Cape taken at around 2300 on 30 July 2013. I have a series of similar photos and if anyone wants any of them I am happy to post them here on SH. I would love to return to Scotland but, like so many of us, seem to be running out of time, money and/or good health. I have thousands of pics taken on about 10 trips around Europe in the last 20 years or so and I love to just watch them in peace and quiet on the 'good' (HD) TV rather than the crap that it usually shows. Memories are usually kinder than current reality. The North Cape and the Midnight Sun are very much a hit and miss affair as this pic taken about 2200 on 3 August 2011 confirms. David, it’s also cheaper and safer. I do not fly overseas anymore,at my age and all the crap one has To go through at the airports, not only that when overseas I feel as if there is a target on my back.

My best bucket list visits take place in my head. Isn't that why older people find their memory for earlier times seems to get better. I also live a place I love, deliberately so, and I can walk out my door and within 20 minutes be in a place I have worked hard to know well, the plants, the paths, the tracks, the history. I know I am lucky, but we have worked to be here, it has cost us some things and brought us others. When we walk down the town, we raise a hand to so many, stop to talk to some, gossip about others. Our neighbours are good people, things do change and sometimes it seems like not much of it for the better.
Bucket list is a death like my Dad's, walk in the house and say "The garden is lovely" and drop dead. We are not getting out of this alive, and easy end is gift to be wished for. P.S. 70 yesterday, to my surprise.
