That's the one - Southern tip of Taiwan, allegedly the only fortified lighthouse in the world (the natives are much more friendly now than they were in the 19th Century)

On one voyage to Japan, after a particularly rough trip up the South China Sea dodging 2 Typhoons. (Dead Slow Ahead - Stop Engines for 2 days) We were back up to Full Sea Speed when on the 12 - 4 Watch the Engine-room phone rang "Second Mate here. Can we stop, there's a Lighthouse dead ahead, and there shouldn't be"
When he worked out which lighthouse it was, we were actually over 200 miles ahead of our estimated position - so this lighthouse probably saved my life.

Name that Bar

Now this may bring back memories to some (As long as there wasn't too much involved)

I will give it to you for either now or back then (1970s-80s) names.

Clue - not home trade.

Depends which Japanese port you were in, Kobe, Osaka, Nagoya, & so many others, they were all the best at the time! The grey cells won`t play ball with yours though, sorry.

I Guess it was a bit hard

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@34.68...!7i5376!8i2688

on Google Maps 360 deg - At the end of this alley is the Kobe Motomachi - swing round to your left and go through the door - it looks almost the same as when I last went there in 1983 (visited many times 77-83) - there used to be a mirror behind the bar, not on the right wall, but there is still a P & O pennant behind the bar and what looks like it may be a picture of a UASC K class ship (too much light shining off the surface to be sure)

It is now called the Licky Tomato Bar (names of two other bars in Kobe back then) but this used to be the Harbor Lights Bar, Kobe

Amazing what you can find in google maps these days

This is the ex Manxman. The notch was needed when she was refitting in Central Dry Dock, Hull so that the bow didn't knock down the wall at the end of the Dry Dock.

I claim my £5-00.

Dear God, how much money did I squander down the Motomachi in Kobe? If I'd have saved it I would be living in a big house in Heswall like all my sensible Engineer shipmates.

In the movie 'Androcles and the Lion' They sang the Hymn 'Onward Christian Soldiers'. What was controversial about it ?
