Hi,
I am guessing it is the Yorktown. This is based on the fact that this is the replacement for the Yorktown (CV 6) sunk in 1942), the Americans did not want the Japanese to know that the original carrier had been sunk. Thus a new Essex Class Carrier was being built, and the new Yorktown, was being built, and launched as Yorktown in 1943.
The early Essex Class, had a slightly shorter flight deck with a gun sponson projecting forward of the flight deck. This was changed in later Esssex carriers.
I can see no other distinguishing marks, to either prove or disprove this is the second Lexington(CV 11, I think).
Therefore my answer was speculative. I am happy for you to tell me, if you have a different answer. No argument from me. Maybe I should have put ‘early Essex Class?
I do these for fun (and what little sanity I have left) and will not argue if you or sulk with your decision.
Being an ex-Rugby player, I know that the ref is the sole arbiter of fact!
