Promotion at Last!

Glad to see that here, at least, we have been promoted from "Radio Operators" to "Radio Officers!"

Yes, I know Troppo! But there has always been a certain number who made it a "point of honour" to always refer to us as "operators," although operating was only part of our duties. I have noticed in the thousands of merchant ship plans that I have poured over in the past 50 or so years that in over 90% of the cases, the R/Os cabin was designated "Radio Operator". Rather like the majority of the British public who insist on referring to ships as "boats" even though some of them are a quarter of a million tons. It would not be so bad if the others were incorrectly designated as well:

I've always thought being known as a Telegraphist, had a nice sound to it.

The wearing of a Uniform was a chat up line in itself 50 years ago.

I know this has been mentioned elsewhere, but: on Greek crewed ships the R/O is known as 'Marconi' although the official designation is Ασυρματιστης (Asyrmatistis) which literally translates as wireless-ist.

I always used: "Ello Gorgeous, how would you like to clean my bike for a couple of months ?"

Strangely, it never worked ...
