I am a year and a couple of weeks behind you!
Has the party started yet?
Hope that there is some Coke for me.

I'll chip in with lobster thermidor all round. (It's my 58th wedding anniversary today!)

Can only vaguely remember what we were doing at this time of night back then!

This day 50 years ago I mitched off school for the afternoon. I was thumbing a lift to the local village, a lorry stopped and I climbed in. The driver wondered if he was breaking the law by helping me to mitch school and thought it was a great joke, then he said did I hear the One o'clock news that Robert Kennedy had been shot in America. Most people remember where they were when they heard President Kennedy was shot but I remember his brother.

Not as exciting as a birthday or wedding anniversary but there you are. Steward, a dignified tray of Samuel Adams, if you please.

There's something wrong with the S-band radar. It didn't paint that joke approaching at all. The ARPA tracked it all the way from St.Vincent Street in 1981!

Celebrations

Happy birthday Billy boy, you don't look a day over 70. Well done.

Tom, I hope that you and Mrs Tom celebrated your milestone in spectacular fashion. I trust that you showered her with flowers.

I'm sure that Billy boy has really turned it on for us with lots of whatever it is that we like to partake of. Oh, a Schooner of Dom, don't mind if I do.

Here's to Life, Love and Friendships' forged along the way. Dear me, I knew I shouldn't have had a schooner of Dom it does make me all sentimental and teary.

Its a bit like Haleys Comet, it was heard in Govan in the 60's, Knightsbridge Green about '74, Corn Exchange Buildings in 1978, Glasgow in 1981 and only made it to H&W in 2018.

May the Lord in his mercy look down on Belfast.

Hot off the press:

"The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) issued an amended Marine Guidance Note regarding alcohol limits for mariners on UK vessels worldwide and for vessels operating in UK waters. The new limit for blood is 0.05% or 50 milligram in 100 milliliters. The new limit for breath is 0.25 milligrams per liter of 25 micrograms in 100 milliliters. MGN 590 (M+F)".

How in Gods name are we supposed to run a ship with drivel like that coming from the Board of Trade? I feel a nose bleed and a sense of humour failure coming on.

Never fret yersel ES, as an injuneer you ken fine well when faced with a breathalyser a quick mouthful of bunker oil works wonders. I love the expression on their face when the wee machine melts in their hand..

We can only reasonably assume that the limits as shown are the required lower limits because no navigator worth his salt could handle a ship properly with alcohol contents less that those advised. After all we do need steady nerves, especially when docking in a 20 knot cross wind, and with the injun room calling up to tell us there's just enough air for 2 more starts.

OK, OK, I know there's more elaborate machinery and shaft drives in the GD but this is a nostalgia site after all.

Adjusting the amount of blood in my alcohol stream as we speak!!

Always up for a challenge, I enlisted an Alan Turing clone, and have now unlocked the delivery system in my cabin. Aha! Good stuff.

God help your wit Tom. Has Tmac not told you that our machinery is held together by brown paper and bailer twine. At any one time we have enough air for 2 starts or 3 toots on the whistle.

Down below we will keep our alcohol levels between the Lower and Upper Explosive Limits.

ES, the whole thing is to keep smiling and confidence will follow.

I will just give a few toots on the whistle to celebrate all the good things in life.

The old atom pile will top things up, just don't mention it.
