Smart Phones

Undoubtedly a stupid question, but!

The YMs and I have basic old ‘steam and clockwork dinosaur 3G’ mobile phones upon which we happily make and receive calls and SMSs.

We are now reluctantly considering upgrading to an unlocked 'Officeworks' (or similar) low/medium sort of so called Smartphone, principally so that we can receive the new-fangled electronic AFL football ticket thingys.

We want to retain our numbers, plans and phone book etc from the old phone. Is it likely that we could just transfer the SIM card from an old phone to a new one and proceed as if nothing ever happened. (I told you it was a stupid question!)

I realise that overseas info may well be very different but any helpful hints suggestions or advice will be welcome. We find it difficult to get intelligible advice from the likes of Telstra etc.

Many thanks.

SIM cards tend to be interchangeable between phones. I have one that I have used in three or four different handsets. One problem can be physical size because the newer SIMs have break out cards for the three diffferent sizes. If both same, no problem.

I am a dunderhead when it comes to smartphones so my way of staying on top of this digital confusion is to present myself at the Vodafone counter and engage the 12 year old sales person in intelligent conversation. "I would like you to sell me a phone that is mid-range with a plan of about 40 Euro per month and you are to transfer all my data etc from my old phone including the SIM card".
"Not a problem sir.
"If you do this I'll buy an Otter Box from you"

Problem solved.

It's alright now E-S I can see you now have expert assistance from one of my brethren. Just ask him the next time you are swilling that pretend Mackeson together.

I'd guess that Tmac could help too but one wouldn't want a telephone case fashioned by H&W.

Just move the SIM card from the old phone to the new one, or rather have the one that is selling you the new one do it for you. And, oh yes, if you need to change the card, he/she will tap in the information needed as well, with a guaranteed "thanks for shopping with us" ear to ear smile. A smart phone costs that much.

What about data saved to the phone's memory, or doesn't that apply anymore? Some years ago when I was issued with a new phone by me employer, I had to transfer a rather long list of numbers to the SIM and then unload them into the new phone. It took at least three cups of coffee. (They were Nokia phones.)

Roy,

The wonders of modern I phones. Courtesy of my son I have just updated from my I6 to an IX - 10.
Placed them side by side and they had a conversation and the new one took all the data from the old one. Then just changed SIM and off we went. This new one has facial recognition! so just have to look at it and it starts. Multitudes of gizmos for me to play with.

Thank you one and all.
You have all given me helpful information and/or clues in dealing with 12 year olds at the Smartphone Shop.
I am still hopeful of avoiding having to buy one but no one is to tell the YMs or our kids of this.
Thanks again.

They're both on the spectrum.

Thanks Neville. I suppose I had better upgrade my Samsung J3, just to download the new fangled NHS apps, despite it knowing exactly where I have been visiting or shopping for as far back as I care to investigate. More hard earned cash out the window

I had to go into the Vodafone shop and ask for a downgrade. All I want is to phone, text and take the occasional photo. Anything else, I use my iPad.
