British tanker Company
First trip to sea was on the British Holly from January 1955, sailed from Isle of Grain with a cargo of black oil to a couple of ports in the Baltic which in that year were ice bound. An adventure for a very green first trip apprentice. Sailed back to the Tyne for drydock at Middle Dock South Shields. Transfered to British Ardour sailed out to Texas, loaded for a load of Medy ports on through Suez to Persian Gulf on to India and Australia eventually back to Falmouth for drydock, paying off five days before Christmas 1955. I know I grew up very quickly and felt very much at home.

I am not sure when BTC finished and when it started to be called BP. My first BTC? tanker was the British Workman, 1956/7. We sailed from Falmouth bound for Bandar Mashur but, the Suez Canal closed before we reached Port Said (Suez crisis) making it necessary for us to go around the Cape. We loaded crude oil at Bandar Mashur for Haifa and then went to Port Augusta to load FO for Venice and Trieste and then back around the Cape to Bandar Mashur to load crude for Swansea. Two and a bit voyages in 10 months.
I was an AB at the time, Capt. Sadler, master, Mr Houghton Mate. Mr. Jinkerson 2/Mate. It was the only ship that I have sailed in that we all had to launder our own bed linen. we all received 2 bottles of Byprox every week for the task. There were a few memorable incidents during the voyage, but I will go no further. |
