Do you have connections with the Dart (pretty silly question)? I'm a Dartmouth boy myself. Went away to sea at 16, came back and found that you could not afford to live there any more. Tactical withdrawal to Newton Abbot.

Hi David, yes you guessed correctly. I first had a trip on the Dart in 1968 as a passenger on Pride of Paignton. It's a bit of a long story, but I spent the summer holiday of 1969 on that boat, and the next year joined Kiloran II as deckhand with my Dad who had been appointed Master. I then spent the next few years working on the boats, ending up with the Western Lady fleet as Skipper of Pride of the Dart in 1973, and Skipper of Western Lady in 1974 after passing the Trinity House exemption exam. Winters were spent in the yard in Galmpton Creek on maintenance of the boats. My Dad and I were helped greatly by the then Dart Pilot, David Griffiths. I ran my own boat from Torquay when I returned home in 1983 from some adventures overseas on a private yacht. I sold that boat, Our Rosalie, in 1988. I spend summer holidays down that way now and am still in touch with some old friends and workmates. I used to live in Torquay, but am now in Bedford. When I finally retire, the West has a very strong pull!
