HMS Glowworm

I’ve just read a fictionalised account of HMS Glowworm’s ramming of Hipper in WW2. At one point the author talked about the main steam line being hit and the emergency throttles being operated from an emergency position. Is this a figmant of his imagination or was there more than one way to supply steam to the main engines?
