Well that place has changed. I was there in 1982 and the town was like something out of the a set from the film 'The Third Man.' It was like stepping back into the thirties.

Of course it was East Germany then, and I always remember the buses were free, and the bars were very very John Le Carré, (and it took ages to get served.)

We loaded oil product there for Boston and I'll always remember the Boston taxi driver, having asked me where I'd come from and so on (you know what cab drivers are like) utterly refusing to believe we'd bought in an oil product from (and I quote) a 'commie country.'

Borders became very grey when it comes to oil money.

I was there with Sřrlandet in 91 (just after the collapse of the DDR), and although I found Rostock bleak, I thought Warnemuende was a very nice place. It was the Riviera of the obedient DDR state personell.

Well if they're taking 'commie' oil, they have to take the crews who brought it across it seems to me. Ironically from Boston we sailed to Rio to load water for the Falklands.

Strange trip all round.
